Technical Session - Massachusetts 2025-2027 Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization Three Year Plan

Presented by Mass Save Sponsors: Eversource and National Grid

The Sponsors of Mass Save are in the process of launching the Massachusetts 2025-2027 Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization Plan. Please join Ryan Willingham from Eversource and Josh Kessler from National Grid to review this ambitious effort, which has been designed to help ensure that all eligible residents and businesses benefit from the Mass Save programs, and assist the Commonwealth with reaching its 2030 climate goals for the building sector. Over the next three years, the Sponsors of Mass Save will be offering significant technical assistance for commercial & industrial customers to identify decarbonization opportunities and develop plans to implement them. Through the Mass Save programs, the Sponsors will dramatically increase the volume of facility assessments, decarbonization plans, and commissioning efforts for buildings, provided to their customers. The Sponsors are currently in the process of revising this Plan to align with the February 28th order from the Department of Public Utilities. Main Presentation - Framingham Geothermal Pilot

Presented by Eric Bosworth from Eversource and Tim Ashmore from CDM Smith

Eversource’s Framingham Geothermal Pilot Project has entered its first winter season, marking a significant step toward decarbonized residential heating and cooling solutions. The project connects 37 homes and businesses to a shared underground geothermal loop, allowing for efficient heating and cooling through individual heat pump units. Participants anticipate lower energy costs and the addition of home cooling, with projected electric bill reductions of 20%, on average. The system’s energy-sharing model optimizes efficiency, particularly when heating and cooling demands vary across different buildings. This initiative aligns with Massachusetts’ decarbonization goals and serves as a model for broader implementation. While the project demonstrates promise in reducing reliance on natural gas and in lowering emissions, concerns remain about ensuring equitable access to such technology. Eversource views this pilot as a foundation for expanding geothermal solutions statewide, contributing to both equitable climate goals and long-term energy sustainability.

SPEAKERS

Tim Ashmore is a Principal and Client Service Leader at CDM Smith with more than 15 years in project development, design, and construction. He leads CDM Smith’s industrial renewable energy strategy, including development and growth of their thermal energy network business. Under Tim’s leadership, CDM Smith has completed two geothermal network designs for Eversource and National Grid in Massachusetts, and is currently advancing projects in New York, Maryland, and New Jersey, representing nearly half of the utility thermal energy network market. Beyond these regulatory projects, Tim has worked on unregulated projects like Dairy RNG and a variety of hydrogen projects. Before transitioning to the energy transition market, Tim built a multi-faceted career as a project executive in remediation and civil construction, a journalist, and a commercial salmon fisherman.

Eric Bosworth is a Manager in the Clean Technologies business unit of Eversource Gas.  He acts as a technical SME, responsible for the implementation of decarbonization projects to achieve state and internal net zero goals within the Eversource gas portfolio. These projects include Geothermal, Hydrogen, and Renewable Natural Gas opportunities. As part of his role, Eric oversees the planning, design, and construction of networked geothermal pilots. He manages the day-to-day progress, timeline, budget and operations of systems once commissioned. Prior to this role, Eric worked in the Eversource Gas Engineering Department. Before joining Eversource, Eric worked in the upstream oil and gas industry as an international field engineer with Schlumberger. Eric holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
