Come join AEE New England members and guests for a tour of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy's Training Ship and Geothermal System, led by Captain Allen G. Metcalfe, Jr., Vice-President of Operations. The tour will be followed by dinner and a presentation on geothermal fundamentals and project implementation.

**Please note these facilities are not ADA-compliant.  There are no elevators or lifts, and visitors must be able to walk up 9 flights of stairs.

GUIDE FOR TRAINING SHIP and GEOTHERMAL TOUR

As Vice President of Operations at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Captain Allen G. Metcalfe, Jr. manages MMA's construction projects, facilities maintenance and operations, camps and conferences, along with small boats and marine projects.  He has more than 35 years of leadership, engineering, janitorial, business development, and facilities services experience. His previous positions include Vice President of Building Maintenance for Able Services, President of F.E. Moran Fire Protection, Director of Engineering for Equity Office, and Operations Manager for The ServiceMaster Company. Captain Metcalfe also served with distinction in the United States Navy as an F-14 Tomcat Radar Intercept Officer, flying carrier-based combat missions during Operation Desert Storm. He has been a member of various professional organizations, including AFE, ISSA, AEE, and NFPA.  Captain Metcalfe has also served as Vice President of Chicago's National Fire Sprinkler Association Chapter.

A 1985 graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a degree in Marine Engineering, Captain Metcalfe lives in Bourne, Massachusetts with his wife, Patrice, and their two daughters, Lana and Rachel.

SPEAKERS

Carl Lozon, Geothermal Systems Engineering Manager at Celsius Energy, is dedicated to delivering optimized geothermal solutions from conception to completion, ensuring that clients' design goals are met, while adhering to applicable codes and standards.  Carl oversees the modeling, engineering, design, and drafting of the ground heat exchanger to its connection to building mechanical systems, the building's secondary network, and its control system.  He works closely with clients, design partners, and installation contractors to ensure that geothermal systems are designed and installed on schedule and within budget. Additionally, Carl conducts as-built audits during construction, supports system commissioning, and resolves installation issues.

Before joining Celsius Energy, Carl supervised the engineering design of HVAC systems for ships funded by the U.S. Navy. He is a registered Professional Engineer with over 10 years of experience in the HVAC industry, encompassing both new construction and retrofit projects, as well as expertise in the naval ship building industry.

As an Account Manager at Celsius Energy, Yaning Zhang advises on commercial geothermal solutions, ranging from single buildings to large campus networks. She helps clients achieve their net-zero ambitions with minimal construction disruptions, as well as maximized system design and installation optimization.

With more than 10 years of experience in the energy industry, Yaning's current focus is on driving reductions in building energy consumption, building CO2 emissions, and operating expenses through geothermal systems. Her prior leadership roles at SLB Engineering in manufacturing, project management and HR, combined with past collaborations with leading energy companies, helped implement cutting-edge drilling and ground characteristic modeling technologies for the industry.  

Yaning holds a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's in Industrial Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan.  She has supported several landmark geothermal projects, including Eversource’s Networked Geothermal Project in Framingham, Massachusetts.
